Eiffel Tower: 11 facts you don’t know yet

The wrought-iron symbol of Paris cannot be overlooked. But the Eiffel Tower was supposed to be dismantled a long time ago. And be careful: Posting a photo of the Eiffel Tower online can be punishable by law.

The Eiffel Tower was built for the 1889 Paris World’s Fair, which was also on the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. A pompous new building was also needed for such an event.

So why not build a building that would be the tallest in the world at the time? Today the tower shapes the image of the city. But around 130 years ago, only a few Parisians could get used to the plan that a huge electricity pylon would « deface » the city of love from now on.

1. Protests against the building

The artistic elite of France in particular found a perfect object in the Eiffel Tower project to speak out against in an open letter. Signers of the protest document printed in the magazine « Les Temps » in 1887 included Alexandre Dumas the Younger and Guy de Maupassant:

“We, writers, painters, sculptors, architects and passionate lovers of the still intact beauty of Paris, hereby protest with all our strength and outrage, in the name of the misunderstood French taste, in the name of art and the endangered French History against the construction of the useless and monstrous Eiffel Tower in the heart of our capital […] «
