1. Edinburgh Castle
Located on Castle Rock, the more than 1,000 year old Edinburgh Castle rises high above the city. The first fortifications are said to have existed on the site as early as the 6th century. The castle was built on the cone of an extinct volcano. Over the centuries, parts of the building have been destroyed, rebuilt and modified, so that the castle now presents itself in a mix of different eras. On a tour of the castle, you will discover the Scottish crown jewels as well as the scepter and sword, the royal insignia and the Stone of Destiny, the stone of providence. According to legend, the stone was brought into the country by an Egyptian Pharaoh daughter. Christians believe that the stone is part of David’s throne.
